Monroe Blues Series
For the last 19 years, the Monroe County Library System has presented the Black History Month Blues Series celebrating February's Black History Month--an entertaining and educational celebration with ten free, accessible, high-quality programs offered in county-wide venues. Themes of multiculturalism, inclusiveness and tolerance, and a focus on programming suitable for area youngsters, families, and budding artists are present.
Nationally and regionally known artists perform throughout the month. Bluesapalooza is a concert for grade-schoolers. Over 3,000 individuals participate annually, along with more than 1,500 youth. Forty-some artists perform; 65% are Michigan blues artists.
Collaborators include City of Monroe's Parks & Recreation Department, Toledo's Black Swamp Blues Society, Detroit Blues Society, Downtown Monroe Business Network and Monroe County Convention & Tourism Bureau.
